He introduced a novel strain of tobacco derived from seeds he had procured from a different source. Food crops like corn were grown in the Shenandoah Valley, keeping the area lush and profitable and attracting Germans and Scots Irish folks from Pennsylvania.

Before World War II, more people left Virginia than went in. Over the next few decades, millions of people moved to the state from neighboring and northeastern states. Immigration from outside the United States started to increase at the start of the 21st century. Most immigrants came from Latin America and Asia.
